Pharmacy, Community Pharmacy, Retail Pharmacy, Public Pharmacy

A pharmacy is a shop where drugs are sold and dispensed. A pharmacy in a hospital is called a hospital pharmacy. It can be in a community hence called a community pharmacy, public pharmacy or retail pharmacy. There must be a pharmacist on ground at all times. Focus is on the local population. They build-up a reputation/relationship with the individual to improve their condition.

A pharmacy sells and dispenses drugs including compounding. Community pharmacy (retail, public) can also sell other products to increase sales.

A post in Pharmaceutical-journal.com tried to differentiate between a community pharmacy and retail pharmacy. They ended up confusing me the more. But the little I got from it is that retail is more about selling while community is more about the patient. Community tries to interact with the customers coming from the community. There is a closeness with the community that retail does not put into consideration. Mind you I don't buy this explanation. They are both the same.

Medical stores on the other hand sell only non-drug related items. They are called over the counter (OTC) products that don't require a prescription. Examples are medical equipment like walkers, wheelchair, bathing and toiletry, medical monitoring device, personal emergency and response system service, oxygen home therapy and respiratory equipment, hospital rooms equipment setups for homes, etc.
