There are so many body weight gain solutions. They are literally all over the internet. Majority of these solutions are drugs or supplements. The best method to gain weight is natural process. However, information on these products are in almost every blog or social media platform out there. The reason the proliferation of such information is the financial gains attached to it.

Many people, especially young girls in Nigeria, are ever ready to try out these body weight gain products. This is because they are at the age they are more aware of their body structure. This is unlike men who rarely consider that and married women who don't bother to impress their husband with shape. These products are not very popular in some places like Ghana. It is believed that society's idea of body structure plays an important role in this.

There are so many weight gain supplements. They mostly contain multivitamin. Majority of them don't work. The few that work are expensive, have little body weight gain effect in some people and some don't even show any sign. They need regular doses for a long time. And they are only effective with additional lifestyle changes. However, they may be risk free.

It is unfortunately this cannot be said of drugs that people use to gain body weight. Most drugs used for weight gain are cheap. Those that work without lifestyle changes, their safety and side effects may make it a bad idea. They require long term use before they work which is long enough to cause side effects. Some of these products also contain additives such as caffeine and creatine.

Most of these drugs are marketed as over the counter (OTC) medicine. This gives the false assumption that they are safe. However, they are not always like that.

All the drugs used for gaining body weight are not designed for body weight gain but are side effects. And according to promoters, some of these drugs can help part of the body gain weight. That is a lie as there is now way the drug can do that.

Mechanism Of Action

The mechanism of action of these products are different. However, not all drugs have a known mechanism of action. The few that have fall into one or more of these categories;

1. Increase appetite: these drugs make one feel hungrier for food

2. Reduce metabolism: they work be saying absorption of food and slow down how food is 

3. Fluid retention: prevents fluid from leaving the body and can cause fat. But honestly, no product advertised as a weight gain drug works like this because this is completely not sustainable.

4. Increase fat storage: this is one of the best methods of gaining weight but comes with its own mirrade of side effects.

5. Difficulty exercise: some drugs make one weak hence prevent working. Sleep and rest  will increase body weight.

Drugs For Gaining Weight

Steroids: are the most abused drugs for weight gain in Nigeria. There are different types of steroids and many are abused. An Example is methyltestosterone. This drug is a hormone replacement therapy with weight gain as a side effect. This is the drug most athletes abuse and it is illegal.

There are other steroids called oxandrolone, oxymetholone and dexamethasone. 

Antihistamine: the most common antihistamine abuse today as a weight gain drug even called supplement is cyproheptadine. Others are diphenhydramine and cetirizine Most of them contain additives in the form of vitamins.

Dangers Of Weight Gain Products

oxandrolone and oxymetholone are prescribed for increasing body weight after severe infection and surgery. Cyproheptadine is still under study. It is the only drug believed to build fat around the stomach region. However, users should be aware that all drugs have side effects. Cyproheptadine is believed to cause confusion, nausea, hallucinations, sedation, hypotension, etc. The side effects of dexamethasone is mainly compromised immunity exposing the body to infection and osteoporosis.

Additives like caffeine are stimulants and can interfere with drugs and other health conditions. Another is creatinine included in some of these drugs or supplements. Creatine retains water in the body which is not a good thing in kidney disease, bipolar disorders, and parkinsonism. Although, low quantities of these compounds are safe. Some of these additives may be above the damage level just to get it to work as a body weight gain product.

 But generally speaking, getting fat has some side effects. They include obesity, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, and increased cholesterol among others. So before accepting any weight gain product, consult your pharmacist.
