Drug Recall May Just Be Ploy To Increase Customers Trust
Recall of failed drugs |
When a product is suspected to cause harm or failed a legal process, a notice to withdraw it is pass. This includes contaminated, defective, misleading or misbranded. Depending on the level of distribution, the message can be sent to the general public or to some selected companies. The reason for the recall is to enable the companies to fix the problem or stop it altogether if the active is discovered to be dangerous.

Drug recall was a rare occurrence back in the days. It is now becoming very rampant. This is because the ever growing complex supply chain amidst strict regulations Isa affecting product specifications everywhere. This is adding so much burden on the financial standing of the companies. The storage conditions in the western world may be different for a product in the east. Therefore, one batch cannot fit all. A mix up of a batch meant for the west sent to the east can lead to drug recall.
The financial effect of drug recall is huge. It is so huge that it can make small pharmaceutical companies go bankrupt and even close production. However, the effect on big companies is temporary. Long term effect is zero.
Most of the recalls done before year 2000 were initiated by drug regulatory bodies. Recent recalls initiated by drug regulatory bodies are directed towards small pharmaceutical companies. The big ones are notorious for recalling products. Is like there is a hidden agenda behind this.
Most of the big companies are benefiting from drug recalls. Even though they spend a lot of money in fixing recalls, it does not affect trust in brand according to Ahluwalia et Al., 2000. There is a believe that it kind of increase trust in brand over time. Committed users continue to trust the brand on the notion that they are willing to fix product issues when it arises. In the long run, they know they are in safe hands.
Effects Of Drug Recall In Nigeria
Some countries have modalities in place for handling drug recalls. But in Nigeria with a chaotic drug distribution system, it is very difficult to achieve it. Very few drug recalls have happened in Nigeria. My pikin syrup is a good example. The information was passed to all companies to remove it from their shelves. The information was passed to the general public. The awareness was strong and help push many community pharmacies to remove it from their shelves. In other cases, most community pharmacy will sell their last stock in a hurry to avoid loss. When a buyer insist that the product has been recalled, they will then suggest another brand.
Some that are even aware will still go for the brand citing how long they have been using the product and have not harm them. They may not know that the batch is different. And most community pharmacy will sell because they don't want to loose. Most companies do not cover for such lose.
