It is a good thing for students to work during school days. Some students pay their own school fees with it. It is a normal thing for weekend students to work during weekdays. It is difficult for regular students to add work to their schedule. It is even more difficult for pharmacy students and some other courses. This is because the lengthy lecture hour with time for personal study leave no time for side job. However, some have been successfully in it.

When To Start

Many fresh students always consider working during semester. It is a normal way of life in many  foreign countries. But before you jump in, consider the nature of our school system here in Nigeria. It is advisable to wait to get to year two (200 level) before deciding if to take that step. By that time, you have been accustomed with the settings knowing your strength and weaknesses. But don't forget the higher the level, the more difficult it becomes. So if you see yourself able to manage the situation now, it may not be same the next level. Better to get some vital information from those ahead how it is like. You can also ask fellow colleagues or even those in higher levels who took that decision how they are coping.

How To Start

First decide how many hours you can work in a day. Look at your lecture time table. Always remember that may lecturers fix impromptu lectures within the week and even weekends. I have received lectures a couple of times on Sundays. Add up time for extracurricular activities, impromptu academic activities and social life. By then you must have come up with your own time table.
Next is the type of job you like. It is not a must it must be pharmacy related. However, there is advantage of picking up a job in a pharmacy related field. It will give you practical knowledge of what you are learning in class. It is now practice base and not theory base. Picking a job in another field may pay more money. For those who already have a skill, it is easy for such ones as they can work at their own spare time as they are their own boss. This will make it easy to attend impromptu school activities with taking permission from anyone. A very good example is online jobs such as blogging, vblogging, freelance, graphic designer, etc.

From the very beginning, inform your boss about your free time and how to handle the situation when you are called up for an impromptu school activity. Honestly, even if it is free majority of boss will not accept that kind of schedule. Just hope you get one like that.
With a side job, you may end up giving up on your social life. It may be worth it at the end but all work and no play makes jack a dull student. But the pay may be worth it both monetarily and experience. You can even develop friendship with your boss that may end up well in the future.
