One of the academic requirements of accrediting the pharmacy programme is access to an academic library. Schools make provision for a general library. However, schools of pharmacy have their own library for pharmacy students.

Academic libraries provide information services to their respective communities, which range from lecturers to students. The modern library is very different from the library some years back. To enjoy it, there are things students and other users must take into account.

School library and pharmacy library have a similar structure. The only difference is that pharmacy library will definitely be smaller with only pharmacy related materials.
The modern library is divided into four sectors. Each is separated from the other. This is done to achieve ease of usage. They are:
  1. Information and Communication Technology (I.C.T) Sector
  2. Books area
  3. Reading room
  4. Bookshop

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector In Library

This area is very new in Nigeria and believe me, there are still many school library out there in Nigeria that does not have these facilities. However, for those that have, the following facts will help students learn and use it to the fullest.
ICT sector is composed of modern electronic gadgets such as the computer, iPad etc. with information resources. They are further divided into online and of line resources.

Online Resources

These gadgets have been designed to be able to access certain free and paid online resources. The internet service in the room may be pass-worded from other gadgets in the room. Students may not be able to access any other website aside preloaded websites. These gadgets can access some websites that require online payment or permission from the provided only to school libraries. This is very common in Africa as so many online resources make their works free for Africa schools, which is not so when schools from more developed countries apply.
Another aspect of this programme is the provision of these online resources available in students’ portal. Just log on with your personal gadgets even from your room to access these data in your students’ portal. This is the most common as it frees the students from trekking down to the school library to access these data.

Off-line Resources

With the use of gadgets in the library, the student can access some resources already downloaded and stored in them. This one is cheap as it prevents the school cost of providing internet subscription and is always readily available even when there is no internet subscription. However, students ought to know so much about catalogue in this case. What I mean is that each of the gadgets in the room cannot contain every resource in the library. This is due to the low storage space of these gadgets. So, therefore, each gadget have the data stored in it. For students to be able to access the resources s/he wants, the student must know the gadget such resources are stored.
Luckily, these gadgets will be labelled in an index. This index can be with the librarian in charge or placed where everyone can have a quick glance at it. Therefore, for students to access an offline work, the student must have an idea of what he is looking for. For example, some group of laptops may contain resources for only pharmacology materials. Each of them will be specific. Two or three laptops may contain same resources. This will prevent the problem of having two students struggling for the same laptop if they both are looking for the same information at the same time. This is very common during examination or test.
Libraries with these resources usually have a table where the gadgets rest and a chair that the student can sit while accessing the gadget. For this reason, the reading room discuss later may not be needed by students.

Examples Of Gadgets In Information and Communication Technology Sector Libraries

  • Compact disk
  • Digital video disk
  • Videos

  • Etc.

The traditional method of stocking books is gradually fading away although it is very slow in Nigeria. The high cost of importing books is more than the cost of subscribing and downloading these books online. New books are very hard to come by in libraries. However, students can get one or two things from them.
There are several methods of arranging library books. The method used in your school can be learnt from the librarian. Once mastered, it is very easy to locate a book on the shelf. The most common design is arrangement based on department. There is a general room for others that do not fall into departments or other categories such journals, periodicals etc.

The arrangements could be by alphabetical order using author’s name, a code that can be gotten from the librarian etc. A very good example is Dewey decimal system of arrangement and code name.

Reading Room In Pharmacy Library

After having access to the resource you are looking for, it is possible to borrow the book to read at home. However, for those who just want to read, there is a room with tables and chairs designed for this purpose different from where books and gadgets are kept. To borrow a book home, consult the librarian on the method. Some schools do not allow students to borrow while others have protocols that can span hours and require signatures of lecturers to students if not even parents.

Bookshop In Pharmacy Library

This is not very common especially in the library for pharmacy. However, one cannot rule this out. Some libraries open bookshops selling academic books at a subsidized rate.

Requirements Of Using Pharmacy Library

The library is one of the places that are very expensive considering the cost of things in it. It is highly protected especially by the librarian who is always on the lookout. Moreover, the library is designed with the intention of study. For this, there are simple rules and laws guiding the library to achieve this. They include:
  • Bags must be kept outside before coming in
  • Phones are not allowed inside
  • Discussion of any kind between students is not allowed
  • Dressing is very important
Unfortunately, pharmacy libraries are almost useless to pharmacy students. The only advantage is that since it is highly impossible for any pharmacy student to acquire all textbooks, they can access them here free. However, the time the libraries are open is small compared to the time pharmacy students are free in the afternoons due to the lengthy lectures on weekdays.
