This question was very common this year. This was due to the recent changes in the admission process. However, there are some hidden criteria’s most students fail to realize because institutions hide them from the public.

Factors That Must Be Considered
- Factors that increase your chance of admission include first or second choice. Most schools these days do not give admission to those who take them as a second choice. Make a proper inquiry for that.
- The number of students going for pharmacy that year matters. Sometimes, the number reduces while other times the number increases. If the number is high, there is a high probability that the number of students with high grades will be there. On the other hand, when they are few, the number of students with higher grade will be low.
- The cutoff mark changes year in year out. This complements what have been said already. When the number of students with high grades is much, the cutoff mark will be high. It comes down when the grades of the students are low. This happens year in year out. Therefore, when you see your score and it beats last year cutoff mark, just relax and consider the rest factors. This is done to keep the number of students to be admitted yearly to be fairly constant.
- The number of students to be admitted. If the number is high, the probability of admission is high if the number of students coming is also high. Also, the number of students to be taking using JAMB should be considered as some schools admit student’s from their basic (pre-degree) programs too. If the number of JAMB students is high and the number of students given admission through JAMB is low compared with the basic program, chances for JAMB students become slim and vice.
- Lastly, aside merit list, which makes up about 45 % of the total number of students to be admitted, the rest students will come from other criteria’s. Candidates that are indigenous have a higher chance of gaining admission even if their score is not up to the cutoff mark for that year. Here is it. Let’s assume the number of students to be admitted that year into pharmacy is 50. And the institution wants 20 Urhobo students and 10 Isoko students. The cutoff mark will be fixed in such a way that 45 % will beat the cutoff mark. This is the merit list students. If 12 Isoko students got more than 60 and 15 Urhobo got more than 60, two Isoko may not be given admission while 5 more will be added from Urhobo from those who did not beat the cutoff mark. The rest % will be completed by students who are fortunate to be on the other criterias. This is the reason some students who do not beat cutoff mark and were given admission while some that did never got it.
