What Polyfort Is And What Is It Used For?

Polyfort contains Magnesium Hydroxide and Aluminium Hydroxide Gel which are antacids that help in neutralizing stomach acidity. Simethicone (Activated Methylpolysiloxane) is an anti-flatulent that helps to coalesce stomach bubbles to aid their dispersion.

Composition Of Polyfort Suspension

Each 5ml contains:

Aluminum Hydroxide Gel USP Equivalent to Aluminum Hydroxide, 310 mg

Magnesium Hydroxide 100 mg

Simethicone USP 125 mg

Composition and Active Ingredients Of Polyfort Chewable Tablet

Polyfort chewable tablet is composed of the following active ingredients (salts):

Magnesium Hydroxide - 200 mg

Dried Aluminium Hydroxide - 400 mg

Simethicone - 25 mg

Before You Take Polyfort Suspension

Do not take Polyfort Suspension if:

• You have previously had an allergic reaction to any of the active ingredients in Polyfort® suspension (An allergic reaction may include rash, itching, swelling of the face).

• You have swelling in the stomach (abdominal distension).

• You have a low phosphate level (hypophosphatemia).

How To Take Polyfort Suspension

Shake well before use.

Polyfort may affect the absorption of other drugs. The intake with other drugs should be separated by 2-3 hours.

Dosage Of Polyfort Suspension

Adults: Take 5-10 ml after meals and at bedtime or as directed by the physician.

Children (6 - 12 years): 5 ml after meals and at bedtime or as directed by the physician.

Dosage Of Polyfort Chewable Tablet

Adults: Take 1-2 tablet after meals and at bedtime or as directed by the physician.
Children (6 - 12 years): 1 tablet after meals and at bedtime or as directed by the physician.

Possible Side Effects Of Polyfort Suspension

At recommended doses, Polyfort is usually well tolerated. Most of the side effects are mild and include: constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and rarely weight loss. If you notice any other side effects, consult your medical doctor immediately.

Warnings And Precautions

• Do not exceed the stated dose

• Caution should be taken in patients with kidney disease.

• Consult your medical doctor if you have decreased gastrointestinal motility.

Drug Interactions

Polyfort may decrease the absorption of other drugs if administered concomitantly. Polyfort can reduce the absorption of Phenothiazines, Fluoroquinolones, Tetracycline, Isoniazid. Antimuscarinics and Vitamin A, thereby, reducing their effectiveness. It may also increase the absorption of drugs like levodopa, thereby causing toxicity.

Symptoms Of Overdose And Treatment

Though very unlikely to occur, if used in excess or for a long time, the administration should be discontinued. In absence of other conditions, the only symptom of overdosage is diarrhea. In cases of severe kidney impairment, there may be a risk of poisoning due to magnesium and it is manifested by dry mouth, dizziness and difficulties in breathing. The treatment of over dosage should consist of gastric lavage and increased intestinal transit through the use of laxatives lacking magnesium in composition.
