Most biochemists in Nigeria wanted to be medical doctors in the future. It was the admission difficulty that pushed them into biochemistry. So they want to know if it is possible for them to become medical doctors.

A medical doctor (M.D.) is a licensed physician who is a graduate of an accredited medical school. Primary Care M.D.s deliver the basic diagnostic and preventive medical care that patients most often need.

Can A Biochemist Become A Medical Doctor

No! But in Nigeria, you can apply for direct entry (DE) or start all over. After the 4 years Biochemistry degree, you can get DE assuming you meet other requirements (o'level in one sitting with credit pass in English language, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology). Some schools require examinations organized by the school. Those who pass the cut off mark will be admitted into year two.

You will find certain courses in medicine to be less challenging such as fundamental biochemistry or physiology or Pharmacology since the Biochemistry degree should equip you with the knowledge in these areas. But other areas such as anatomy, medical practices, patient, etc will still require you to learn.

If this route is not feasible, then get a joint admission and matriculation board (JAMB) unitary tertiary education examination (UTME) form and write the examination. Those who pass the cut off mark will be eligible for the post UTME.

In the UK, you can study for a postgraduate medicine degree. Having done a 3 years Biochemistry degree, you will be able to do a Bachelor degree in Medicine for 4 years instead of the usual 5 years.
