Does Bleach Bath Kill Scabies

Desperate to kill scabies, some have turned to bleach. Bleaching solution is a water-based solution with a concentration of sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide. It is used as a disinfectant to remove surface mildew, bacteria and other contaminants before applying protective coats or treatments.

Scabies is a parasitic infection on your skin caused by microscopic mites called Sarcoptes scabiei. They take up residence just beneath your skin’s surface, laying eggs that cause an itchy skin rash.

The condition is extremely contagious and is passed through skin-to-skin contact. You can also catch scabies from clothing or bedding that’s been used by someone with scabies.

Bleach Kill Scabies

Though bleach may kill the mites, bleach is a harsh chemical and should always be diluted and treated with great care.

It can also damage a person’s skin, eyes, and lungs. Again, it should only be used as a cleaning product and should not come into contact with the skin itself.

However, there is what we call a bleach bath. This is a mixture of many gallons of warm water and few quantities of bleach. A blog put it at 40 gallon of water with ½ bottle of bleach.

Then, the person can sit inside for 10 minutes without submerging the head. A bleach bath is unique because it kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and moisturizes your skin all in the same treatment. Bathing in a solution of water and a small concentration of bleach might be especially effective because it rids your body’s surface of bacteria and reduces inflammation.

Bleach bath does not kill scabies under the skin except at toxic levels. But it is necessary to prevent secondary infection and inflammation including itching symptoms. It is also used to disinfect clothing and materials from scabies.
