As a child grows, mother milk will not be adequate for the baby. The need for foods containing high amounts of protein and carbohydrates grows. This is especially so after six months.

Food given to children at this age must be smooth, soft and rich in nutrients. They must be easily digested.
Pap, also called akamu, is prepared with yellow maize, sorghum, pearl millet, and soybeans.
Pap is a good gluten-free alternative food for babies after weaning or during the first stage of life. Pap is a rich source of energy. It contains protein and carbohydrates, rich in minerals like iron, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and vitamins like; c, e, k and vitamin B6.
And also acts as a probiotic that helps ease diarrhea and stomach upset in children (or adults).

Baby formulas like SMA gold, NAN and soya beans contain nutrients at varying proportions. Unfortunately, they don't have high protein and carbohydrates content which is very necessary for children. The need for pap comes in. When added to pap, it leads to a balanced diet.
SMA gold, NAN and soya bean are not the only source of extra nutrients that can be added to pap. They are processed products that are expensive. Pap can be added to ground dry fish or crayfish to improve the protein content of the meals. A teaspoon of vegetable oil added to the meal can increase the energy content of the food for the baby.
