Advantage Of Attending Pharmacy Lecture Class

Attending lectures is compulsory in Nigeria university. It is one of the requirements for eligibility to sit for an examination. But because of the fact that many lecturers don't follow the timetable, they don't use it. For this reason, many students deliberately skip lectures.

There are so many reasons to skip lectures. But many are not genuine. There are so many advantages to attending lectures. Even when the material has been given, the need to attend lectures is still there. There are very few students that can do well without lecture. However, they may have done better if they had attended lectures.

One of the main reasons many students feel reluctant to attend lectures is even the lecturers themselves. Some lecturers don't take their own lecture seriously. Their attitude toward their own lecture is clearly seen by the students hence the students counter reaction. Lecturers should love their job and this will reflect in their attitude toward lecture class.

Advantage Of Attending Lecture

One of the main reasons attending lectures is good is because it saves learning time. How you may ask. It is simple. During lecture, students listen to and see graphical illustrations of what the lecturers are saying and doing. This is how it happens.

Echoic Memory

Many students learn from what they hear. It is called echoic memory. It is a sensory memory that registers specific to auditory information (sound). Echoic memories are heard once, stored slightly longer than visual memory. The sensory store is capable of storing a large amount of auditory information for about 3-4 seconds.

Iconic Memory

On the other hand, iconic memory is the visual sensory memory register pertaining to the visual domain and a fast decaying store of information. Students see illustrations of images and quickly forget them. Visuals disappear fast. There are three stores of visual short term memory: brief, pre-categorical and high capacity memory stores. These memories only last a few millisecond and fade quickly.

Eidetic Memory

Since both iconic and echoic memory last a few seconds, what is the advantage of lecture then? That is where eidetic memory comes in. Eidetic memory is the ability of the brain to recall images, sound, or objects in memory after only a few instances of exposure with high precision. And this happens after exposure for some time without using a mnemonic.

So attending lectures can help create audiovisuals that can help you recall images, sounds and objects when studying alone. This helps to reduce study time. It is now easy to understand what you read. So instead of skipping lectures hoping to study the material alone with the intention of saving those time, use it to attend the lecture to save study time. Without lectures, it will take more time to understand what you are reading.

And lecturers should desist from dropping materials for students to read without lectures. Using online lectures with video format is good. But this is expensive for both students and lecturers. Because of that, many lectures are now done with messaging apps without video. However, just using text messages to lecture removes the visual aids. It is better to send a video of the lecture than using text format.

Other advantage of attending lectures include:

  • Concentration: paying close attention to lectures requires a lot of discipline. This is a habit that needs to be learned in class which is valuable later in life.
  • Area of concentration (AOC): Many lecturers give ideas of where they will like questions to come from. Some do this unknowingly why others will tell the class. During lectures, the lecturer may focus more on some topics more than others. They talk about assignments, events and other topics that may be related to the lecture but not in the material.
  • Interaction: lecture gives the student the chance to ask questions. The question can be to the lecturer during the lecture or fellow student after class.
