Pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in Nigeria have done a good job when you consider the constraints facing them. A lot started but few survive the struggle. There are about 130 registered pharmaceutical manufacturing companies with pharmacists council of Nigeria, PCN, as at 2011. Some are subsidiary of other companies outside the shores of the country while few are owned and manged by indigenous persons.
Among this list are some that have stood out in terms of revenue generated. The good news is that most of the indigenous owned company made it in the list. That shows that the management team is doing a good job.

The list was compiled in 2011 but it is still very relevant today. This is because not much have changed ever since then. Most of the name you will see here are household names. The list was compiled based on estimated revenue generated annually.

GSK is a United kingdom (UK) pharmaceutical company that was incorporated in Nigeria in the year 1971. The name is GlaxoSmithKline consumer Nigeria plc. It commenced business in 1972 under the trade name beecham limited. With the head quarter in Lagos, they manufacture products in the wellness (OTC) category, oral healthcare category and nutrition category. Their products are sensodyne toothpaste, Maclean's toothpaste, Panadol tablet, Panadol extra tablet, Andrews liver salt, voltaren, otrivin nasal spray, cac 1000, etc. The other gsk products they don't produce are imported.

May & Baker ($40 million)
May & Baker pharmaceutical company

May & Baker Nigeria plc came to Nigeria in the year 1944 and came to be regarded as the first pharmaceutical company in Nigeria. It is a subsidiary of may & Baker, London. The London branch was started by grimwade, may and Pickett, later change ownership to Williams Gerrard Baker and John may in 1839. Focusing on pharmaceutical, fine chemicals and agrochemicals, they expanded to mainly Commonwealth nation's. The local branch produce pharmaceutical ranging from paracetamol to antibacterial.

Founded in 1995 as a distributor of pharmaceutical product's, it later began the importation of its own brands of finish products. They open their first local manufacturing facility in 2002. They went into the production of anti retroviral which made them the first in sub Saharan Africa to manufacture it. They have their head quarter in Lagos.

A household name simply because it produces quality drugs for treating the most common disease in Nigeria at affordable prices. This is the only manufacturing company owned by a woman, the person of Dr Stella C. Okoli, OON. The company was founded in 1984 surviving from a community pharmacy that date back to some few years earlier. Their pioneer product is the emzor paracetamol which shoot it to limelight and it is still their most valuable product till date. They currently produce more than 100 products exporting some to other African countries. Some are  paracetamol, antihistamine, antibiotics, antimalarial, supplement, etc.

Juhel ($40 million)

Juhel is an indigenous pharmaceutical company founded in 1987 in Anambra state. They have two different plants in Nigeria. One at Emene, Enugu state where oral dosage forms are produce and the other at Akwa, Anambra state where parenteral are produce. In total, they have over 100 products to their name.

Evans has been in Nigeria since 1954 as Glaxo Nigeria plc until it change name in 1994 to Evans pharmaceutical LTD. They manufacture health products that range from OTC to prescription only, market and distribute same in Nigeria. Some of their products are antihypertensive, antimalarial, anti infective, etc.

Nigerian German chemicals (NGC) is a public limited liability company which was formed in 1964 in Nigeria. They have over the years built 8 depots for production of pharmaceutical and industrial chemicals. There is one in Ibadan, Ogun and Benin city. They were formally called Hoechst product Nigeria (Nigeria hoechst plc). Some of their pharmaceutical product are NGC cough syrups.

Ranbaxy was an Indian company formed in 1937 by Ranbir Singh and Gurbax Singh. The name was coined from RANbir and gurBAX. Change of ownership over the years saw a lot of changes to the company. The Nigeria branch which is a subsidiary of Ranbaxy (Netherlands) B.V took off in 1977 as Ranmax laboratory Nigeria LTD. Located in Lagos, they import, manufacture and sells pharmaceutical product in Nigeria such as anti retroviral, nutritional, antianaemic , pain management, etc.

It was incorporated in 1975 and started commercial production in the year 1978. The company is a brainchild of Omega meyer LTD, New Jersey. Vitabiotics, UK is the technical partners of vitabiotics Nigeria LTD. Their products range from analgesic, antimalarial, blood tonics, antibacterials, etc. Some of their popular product are coflin syrups, asmanol F tablet, vitamin B complex tablet, etc.
