It all started in the colonial era to post-colonial era as a centre of education. It is the then Government Teachers’ Training College (T.T.C). When the institution started awarding Nigerian Certificate of Education (N.C.E) in the year 1971 – 1985, it became a college of education. From 1981 – 1985, it offered degree programmes when it was affiliated with Bendel State University (University of Benin) as it was the faculty of education.
The creation of Delta State University was born out of the desire to have a state-owned university when Delta State was carved out from Bendel State in 1991. Then, the Bendel State University, Ekpoma was changed to Edo State University in 1991. On 30th April 1992, the then executive governor of Delta State, Olorogun Felix Ibru established Deslu.
Delsu initially started with five faculties. It took another 13 years before the faculty of pharmacy was born which is the youngest today.

History Of The Faculty Of Pharmacy, Delsu

The history of Delsu pharmacy is unique and rich. According to the pioneer dean of the faculty of pharmacy, Delsu, prof.  David T. Okpako, a professor of pharmacology, he was called by the then vice-chancellor (V.C) of the university, prof. John Okpako Enaohwo for a need to establish a pharmacy in Delsu. He wanted the dean to replicate what he did with the faculty of pharmacy at the University of Ibadan (UI).
He honoured the invitation but was disappointed with what he saw on ground. The VC thought that pharmacy would be attached to the basic medical college. When he was told pharmacy is a faculty of its own, he provided the facilities in the present location promising a better structure in the future. All these happened in the year 2004/2005. The pharmacy was introduced into the pre-degree programme and the first set of pharmacy students were admitted the next year.
The number admitted was roughly 45 but many of them left when the fate of the faculty was not that sure. They were about 30 that got to year three.
The growth of the faculty hangs on the balance. The VC confess that he never knew the faculty of pharmacy would be that expensive hence regretted ever establishing it. The fear was increased when the pioneer VC left office three years later. The dean retired that same year from active service. The new VC and dean work hand in hand. The first achievement was the construction of the faculty of pharmacy complex in the year 2011. To the students, this was a milestone. However, all the students were shocked to learn that the initial story of a befitting structure is the core reason for accreditation was dashed when lecturers started listing other criteria. The pressure where more on the pioneer students as they have gone far.
It was like with each time there was a milestone cross was a revelation of other requirements. It took years before the basic requirement was met.
The first accreditation was by Nigerian Universities Commission (N.U.C) in 2012. Most of the students thought it was over only to hear of another accreditation by Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (P.C.N). They came later in the year and just like their colleague gave a partial accreditation. By this time, the pioneer set have stayed at home for 3 years.
With the celebration came the preparation for induction. The first two sets were inducted same day on the 18 of July 2014. The first set were 18 in number. To show their resilience, the pioneer dean has this to say about them:
I would like to acknowledge the courage, patience, and grit of the founding students some of whom are to be inducted today. Like experimental guinea pigs, you enrolled in a program yet to be approved by the NUC and the PCN with an uncertain future; and your parents who gave oral and financial support which enable you to achieve your goal. You are real pioneers! My prayer is that as you go into the world, whatever you do with this qualification, you will build on this pioneering experience and be good ambassadors of Delsu pharmacy, and pride to your family. I a proud to have played a part in this achievement.
Ever since then, Delsu has inducted five more sets the last in the third of June 2017. However, the next induction ceremony is scheduled to hold on the 15th of November 2017. This induction has some records to break. This is the first time graduates of pharmacy will be inducted few months after their final examinations. This was only made possible by the present ag. dean of the faculty, Ass. Prof Mathew I. Arhewor.
