University Of Port Harcourt Pharmacy, UNIPORT Programme

Pharmacy programme in UNIPORT
UNIPORT Logo
The University of Port Harcourt (U.N.I.P.O.R.T) is a federal university in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The school was founded in the year 1975 with eleven faculties including pharmaceutical Science, which is the youngest.

It initially started as a university college with just six schools but later changed after the approval of National Universities Commission (N.U.C) to University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT. The school has three campuses very close to each other namely; Abuja, delta and choba.
The faculty of pharmaceutical sciences (faculty of pharmacy) in UNIPORT is a very young faculty in the school. It is like the youngest pharmacy school in Nigeria for now. It was pioneered by the former vice chancellor of UNIPORT, Emeritus professor Nimi Briggs in collaboration with a former Vice chancellor (V.C) of University of Nigeria (U.N.N), Nsukka, Professor Oleta Odeala as the dean in the year 2004.
The faculty is affiliated with Association of Commonwealth Universities (A.C.U), Association of African Universities (A.F.U) and Uniport Teaching hospital. The institution is part of International Pharmacy Federation (F.I.P).
They had their first induction/Oath taking ceremony in the year 2012. Ever since then, they have inducted well over five sets of pharmacists.
UNIPORT has three modes of entry into its pharmaceutical science degree programme similar to Delsu. They are Unitary Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Basic/Predegree and direct entry.

Pre Degree

This programme is very similar to Delsu pre-degree in so many aspects. The entry requirements are same as the approved standard from NUC for pharmacy which involves the five credit passes in relevant courses at O’ level. Candidates who wish to study pharmacy in UNIPORT will have to buy their pre-degree entrance form. The cost is N15000. This is excluding bank charges.

The candidates write an entrance examination of 100 multiple-choice questions using computer-based test (C.B.T). Successful candidates will then start the programme properly. In addition, just like in Delsu, the majority if not all of the candidates are admitted.
At this point, the candidates proceed to make payments for the programme. Since the programme is not under NUC, it operates based on no payment, no lecture approach.
The school fees are N75000 and cover the whole programme for one year.
The programme is divided into two semesters. Each semester ends with an examination. The examination is based on subjects that have been taught. Each subject consists of 50 multiple-choice questions graded with 100. The score is cummulated in percentage total.
Each candidate is required to write the Joint Admission And Matriculation Board (J.A.M.B) UTME and must score above some points before their pre-degree admission can be considered.

UTME

Candidates coming in through UTME must buy UNIPORT post UTME form. The form cost N2000 excluding bank charges. Before buying the form, the candidate must score above 200 in JAMB, which is subject to change. The present method of their Post UTME is not very clear. However, the grade from O’ Level is very vital. The screening exercise previously employed used to involve altitude test of 100 multiple-choice question.
Pre-degree and post UTME cut off mark is release. UNIPORT normally admit students based on catchment, merit and educated less develop areas. The basis for the first admission is on catchment and educated less developed area. In most cases, it makes the majority of admission given.
The second list otherwise known as merit list is when those who beat the cut off mark are very sure their name will come out. The number of student admitted is usually very few.
The number of pharmacy students admitted in UNIPORT is in the range of 120. The number admitted from their pre-degree programme is about 100. The number of applicants from JAMB is about 1350. The number of pharmacy pre-degree students in UNIPORT is at this time not known yet. However, this should give a hint as to chances of admission in UNIPORT. One more thing, UNIPORT accepts the second choice and just like Delsu, very difficult to get in with such a choice.
The idea percentage of admission for UNIPORT is 45 % for merit, 35 % for catchment and the rest for educated less developed areas.

Direct Entry

They are admitted straight to year two in school. The criteria are not very different from other schools. They accept A’ Level result such as Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (J.U.P.E.B). They even have JUPEB programme at UNIPORT. The difference between JUPEB at UNIPORT and UNIBEN is the cost. One more thing, the first-semester examination will be set by UNIPORT lecturers.
The school fess breakdown
Application form N10000
Hotel N30000
School fees N160000
UNIPORT does not accept IJMB for now.
Candidates who score above the years cut off mark, which is always in the range of 12, will have to buy JAMB direct entry form. The direct entry for from UNIPORT is N15500. Others with diploma degree in a related field can also buy. All applicants will be expected to write an entrance examination using CBT. The number of yearly direct entry applicants to uniport is not known to me presently. The number of students admitted through direct entry is usually around 15 %.
All admitted students must proceed to pay an acceptance fee. This fee is same irrespective of state of origin. The acceptance is N30000 and the school fees are N96450. This is a yearly fee. Subsequent years is very similar with a little slight difference.

School Hostel Accommodation

UNIPORT provides accommodation to all year one student. The cost of all the hostels in the school is same except the medical hostel. The medical hostel is open to only year four, five and six in the medical department. They are the Claude Ake Block C and the Olusegun Obasanjo clinical hostel. The price for normal school hostel is N20350.

Off-Campus Accommodation

Honestly speaking, the experience of accommodation in UNIPORT outside the campus is very expensive. Even the cost of living outside is far more expensive than the inside. For students’ sake, many of the stores inside have been made to sell goods below certain prices. This is not obtainable outside. Besides, the price for an average single bed-sitter is about N120000.

Postgraduate

To start UNIPORT pharmacy postgraduate programme, the candidate must buy UNIPORT postgraduate from which goes for N25000. This price is same for any postgraduate programme of your choice.

The successful candidate must pay for registration, which is about N2500. The school fees are never stable depending on the programme of choice. It ranges from 160000 yearly.
The cost of deferring admission in UNIPORT is N20000 while late registration in any programme attracts a penalty or fine of N50000.
